I’m going to decorate my cubicle I’ve decided…

I’m not sure exactly what will happen, but it will be AMAZING… No one here at the new office really seems to take much stock in personalization of their workspace. Not that my cubicle at HRC was that much better. I recently read a small thing from life hacker. While only one I thought was truly cool, it was an inspiration. I’m now looking into having an aquarium at my desk. There is a sort of bookshelf/cabinet thing that is situated so that only I can really see into it. (Odd… I thought the point of a bookshelf was to show off that you can actually read and appreciate the tried and true ‘printed’ books).

I have also thought about re-upholstering the panels which are currently some sort of meh-grey fabric. I’m all for conformity, in-fact I bitch and moan when people put their shit on top of the cubical walls… I want to see a GLORIOUS uniform office as I walk in, but I want to see individuality when I go visit someone, like… you know an apartment complex. Everything looks the same on the outside, but its fun to see what people do with the interiors.

Maybe I’m alone in this weird interest in decorating my office… although next to my room I do spent the next greatest amount of time here.

Any suggestions? I know few people actually read this…

Should I gay it up and go with some AMAZINGLY coordinated effort?

Should I causally dress it up? should I really put alot of work into this? am I just wasting time at work??? well probably some of that…

Some idea’s are :

Beach (ca beach theme so I can feel like I’m back home)

Jungle (can’t go wrong with a little jungle fever)

Modern (AKA Ikea overload, like home)

Please keep in mind that my current cubicle is mostly silver, and by mostly, I do mean ENTIRELY silver…

BLEH

Opportunity cost is the loss of potential gain from the best alternative to any choice. Thus, opportunity cost is the cost of pursuing one choice instead of another, cit.

Sometimes you wonder just what you may have missed out on, based on the choices you have made in the past. You certainly can’t keep looking back wondering just ‘what might have been.’ I find I get hung up on the past more often than I’d like. I often wonder what would have happened if I had stayed in California, what if I had stayed in DC and worked at HRC, what if, what if…

The fact remains, that if you run it by the numbers, I’ve made all the right choices. I’ve put my needs first, I’ve achieved goals I have laid out for myself, and I’m doing well. At what point does life stop feeling like a chore and you begin to enjoy it? I know I’ve spent a lot of posts talking about how I’m not happy… This is not going to be one, I promise…

As per the last post, I’ve taken on an entirely new diet and have been working out as per my schedule. 3 days running, 3 days lifting… I’m feeling good about the process, but its hard to say no to the things I like so much… bread and pasta mostly. I find its a good exercise in self-control, seems like I’ve done that a few times lately. I’ve been more social, but I’m find it’s hard to maintain a diet and be social since most of my activities include things I can no longer have on a regular basis.

Back to the topic… At what point do come to terms with your choices? I try, I just tend to find myself dwelling on things outside of my control, So lets put that on that list… I will no longer fret about things beyond my control… I will accept what happens with a grain of salt, and enjoy what i have, in this moment…

On another note, a good family friend, John Truscott passed away wednesday morning… my best wishes go out to Joan, his wife.

Yes, I deleted the last entry. Mainly because nothing I had written was very accurate. I wrote it while I was depressed one night and decided later that nothing there was actually correct. When I get upset or scared, my inclination is to run back home. I am sure most people can understand that mentality.

I recently realized that I have not been truly happy for a long time now. I really tried to think back, and discovered that pretty much since I Interviewed for the new job I have been unhappy. I think I got caught up and relinquished a lot of control. I am going to correct an earlier statement about the new Job, I do like the new company. I just that compared to how things were with HRC, I am not as crucial here. I like feeling as if I am needed and appreciated. I have not found that place here at Segue yet, but I am working on it.

Check list-o-happiness:

Living arrangements – For this I moved out of Springfield, back inside the beltway. I think the new location will be closer to my friends, and to the city. This should cascade down to the other areas I need to address. The new apartment is in Arlington, with my friend Ryan. It’s a nice, modern, clean apartment, and we got a great deal on it as well. (2 months free rent).

Intra-personal – I’d like to see my friends more consistently. As it is, I see some once a week, others once a month, some almost never… I need to spend less time at home and enjoy their company.

Family – Dog actually, I’d like my dog back. I miss him and I enjoy the responsibility I’m forced to take when he’s with me. (I have to get up at this time, I have to come home at this time, etc.)

Worklife – I’d like to get a Masters degree in something work related, As well as to find something at work that needs to be done, and to take the initiative and do it. At HRC I had no problems with this, I rebuilt several sites just to make them a little bit better. I’m trying to locate and equivalent here with Segue.

Physical wellbeing – I’d like to adopt a more stable diet, and to begin to work out. Both the new office and apartment feature Gyms, so now I have no reason to avoid them other then my own laziness.

My life was adrift a few years ago, the time between DC and college. I had everything on track for about a year, but then things slipped and I am not exactly sure why and how, but I am very eager to fix the problem and get things rolling once again.

I’ve been creeping closer to the conclusion that I just don’t feel at home here. I’m either going to attempt to continue working for Segue in CA, or i’ll be getting a new job. It was recently pointed out that one needs goals in order to move towards them, and in the interim of anything more important, (<strike>thinks about someone</strike> wonders why he fell for it again), this is my new short term goal. :)

Its Fall here on the east coast. Something I’m still not entirely accustomed to. I got up this morning, got in my car and I could still see my breath, in the car… unexpected to say the least. I should really look into the logistics of car ownership in the winter, I think my tires were frozen this morning… can tires freeze?

<strike>I’m currently debating the purchase of a new laptop.</strike> I bought a new laptop tonight. I tend to use my laptop more then my desktop these days (the desktop is mainly my TV and video game system, as its on an entertainment center). I’m almost finished paying off my credit card, and that was the requirement for buying a laptop. Looking at the macbook pro. Gorgeous laptop, annoyingly… exactly what I wanted to build 4 years ago and market.

Work is going, I found myself admitting the other night that I was happier working at HRC. Segue is great, nice people etc. but I’m not finding the work as consistent or as fulfilling. I suppose I could make more of an effort to resolve that… I think thats key… I’m looking forward to moving to the new office, I don’t think I’m as happy here because I’m not settled, I don’t have ‘my space.’

Time is going by rapidly these days, I can’t believe its already mid-way into November. I’ve been on the east coast for 15 months, something that was originally only going to last 4 month. I miss home a bit, but at the same time feel as adrift as I did when I first left college. I think the lack of a permanent home weighs heavily… I had a realization the other night that as long as I kept the house in CA, I’d never be home here… I don’t know what I should do, but a lot of my unhappiness has to do with the impermanent living situation.

I moved to Northern Virginia Saturday. Not terribly far from DC, it’s still located on the metro line, albeit the last station :). I’m back with housemates, so this should be interesting. Generally I enjoy the company, and as many of you know I’ve tended to be a hermit in my DC apartment. As my friends commented when they helped me move in, yea its a little smaller, but I already feel much more at home there then my studio in DC. I slept with my windows open the last 2 nights and that has been nice, not living on the ground level in a sketchy area… has its perks. I think the desire for a car has escalated drastically now… I think i’m going to go get one this week if at all possible. The new place is a good mile from anything and several from the metro.

If the dealer still has the A3, then… Wednesday night, it looks like i’ll be an audi owner…

wish me luck!

Well, its official. D.C. and I just celebrated the famed ‘paper’ anniversary. You know what that louse got me? nothing… thats right… one year and it got me nada!

Oh wait, no, I did get something… a new job.

So I totally wasn’t looking to leave HRC. I’ve really enjoyed my time there. I started as an intern one year ago on the 17th. While I am thankful for the opportunities and the growth I’ve received from HRC, I really had to think about my future. It wasn’t easy. I’ve never been in the situation where I have something I’m really happy with, and have another equally enticing offer on the table.

HRC was very interested in keeping me, although in the end I opted for the new job. I’m going to be working for a small company down in Virgina starting at the end of this month. Pretty much doing the same thing I am at HRC, minus the grunt work and tedious requests.

I got a raise, so that will be a welcomed addition. I’m considering moving to virgina, so I can have my puppy. Not really a whole lot of news, just doing my best to get life on track. I spent too long astray, but things have finally settled down a bit.

I reactivated my city of heroes account, woooo procrastination. I also started doing contract work on the side. www.adidance.com

So thats about all, I’m pretty boring lately, being broke and living paycheck to paycheck can do that to a person…

-till next time

I can’t believe its July already. It’s amazing what having a job you love will do for you. I went on vacation from the 15th of June through the 26th. I went back to CA to see my friends, family and puppy. It was really nice to get to relax and be back there, the weather was awesome. I was a bit worried to leave work. We have a new intern and another developer now. I felt like either things would fall apart, and I’d be praised when I got back. Or… less appealing, they’d see how they don’t need me and can work just fine without me. I think it fell in the middle somewhere.

When I got back, my boss gave me a shiny new blackberry! So that was a nice surprise. Also I got put in charge of launching the 34 steering committee websites. I see this a great opportunity for me to earn my keep, and hopefully get a promotion out of it ;).

On a side not, I got a side job working for a friend, doing a website design for his new company. So far its going really well, and I’m planning on getting a new laptop with the money I make. I’m getting a macbook pro I think.
